Do You Experience Blurred Vision After Eating?

diabetic eyesight after eating food 640×350 1 Las Vegas, NV

Experiencing blurred vision after eating a carb-based meal may be an early warning sign of diabetes. Temporary spikes in blood sugar, such as after enjoying a sugary treat, can affect your eyes’ focusing abilities.

High blood sugar levels can eventually lead to irreversible vision loss. Fortunately, Yesnick Vision Center can carefully monitor your eye health and vision, to ensure the early detection and treatment of diabetes-related eye problems.

How Can Elevated Blood Sugar Lead To Blurry Vision?

Diabetes occurs when a person’s blood sugar levels are excessively elevated and the body is unable to metabolize food in a healthy way. Too much sugar in the blood can cause fluid to build up in the lens of the eye and negatively impact your ability to see clearly.

The crystalline lens in the eye is responsible for focusing light directly onto the retina for clear, crisp vision. However, the excess fluid in the lens caused by high blood sugar reduces the lens’ focusing capacity.

These foods cause the quickest and highest spikes in blood sugar levels, so pay attention to any visual changes after eating the following:

  • White bread, rice and pasta
  • Fruit juice
  • Candies
  • Baked goods
  • Potatoes in any form
  • Sugary sodas and beverages
  • Breakfast cereals

Blurred vision can also result from diabetic retinopathy, a serious complication of diabetes. When the blood vessels in the retina become damaged due to prolonged uncontrolled blood sugar levels, they can leak fluid into the retina and cause it to swell.

Of course, temporary blurred vision doesn’t always mean diabetes. If you experience any sudden changes in vision, whether temporary or not, contact your eye doctor without delay to rule out any underlying conditions.
