Low Vision

Low Vision – Compilation of The Most Common Questions

Low Vision Magnifying Glass | Eye Doctor in Las Vegas, NV

What is low vision?

The answer is low vision isn't something that we can fix with surgical procedures, with contact lenses, or with conventional glasses. Low vision is not something that means blindness. It just means reduced vision that we can fix with other means, such as magnifiers, telescopes, microscopes, and many other accessibilities and accommodations. These can be very helpful to keep people independent and safe and living again.

What is low vision therapy?

Low Vision therapy is basically a program that the patient and I put together to determine how to go about helping or assisting someone achieve goals of reading, seeing at a distance, seeing an intermediate such as using their computer, seeing to perform activities of daily living, such as meal preparations. These are visits that take place in the clinic or in the patient's home. Oftentimes at both locations. We use a variety of ways to get people to be independent, safe, and accomplish the goals that they have mentioned at the initial evaluation.

Can patients have stronger glasses to see better when they have macular degeneration or glaucoma or diabetes in the eyes or any other low vision condition?

We can make glasses that are stronger for reading. We have reading magnifiers that are designed to look like glasses are very helpful to the majority of our patients. They come in a variety of magnification powers, and I teach everybody how to use them.

Patients often want to know if there's the ability to test out magnifiers before they purchase them?

I often encourage them to come in for a free consultation and test drive magnification aids that oftentimes are so-so new that no one knows they exist! These are things like the new E-sight, Vision Buddy, Iris Vision, OrCam, there are so many different magnifiers types and different low vision aids. There are the wearable technology, the handheld magnifiers, the desktop magnifiers, computer magnifiers, glasses magnifiers; there are so many of them that I encourage patients to come in and test drive them during a free consult.

Home Visits for Low Vision

I want patients to know that I can come to their homes to do adaptations that will help them continue to cook, to clean, to do laundry, and to perform mobility functions that will keep them safe and independent. What I do is covered by most insurances and certainly by Medicare and Medicaid. Home visits are part of the low vision therapy program. I love to be able to keep patients independent and safe during home visits.

Patients often ask,

Can I drive again if I have macular degeneration?

The answer is yes! The possibility is pretty likely. The doctor would need to examine the eyes first and as long as they fall within the DMV requirements, we can help. Oftentimes with the use of bioptic telescopes, a drive training drive assessment, and making sure that all DMV requirements are followed. We can help patients continue to drive despite their vision changes due to macular degeneration.

If you or a loved one has low vision or may be a low vision candidate, we welcome you to contact our office today to schedule a low vision consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions with DR. YESNICK

Q: Can you request lenses made from glass? Is glass still used for lenses?

  • A: Yes. Opticians still sometimes use glass for lenses. However, glass is not used very often because they aren’t as safe. If these glass lenses breaks, they can shatters into many pieces and can injure the eye. Glass lenses are much heavier than plastic lenses, so they can make your eyeglasses less comfortable to wear.

Q: Can a coating be added to eyeglasses to protect them from further scratches?

  • A: A protective coating can’t be added to a lens after it’s scratched. The coating is applied when the lens is manufactured and can’t be put on later.

Why Buy Your Eyeglasses at Our Las Vegas Store Near You?

5 reasons to go local when you purchase your Las Vegas glasses

asian girl glasses 1280x853We won’t argue with you; online shopping is convenient. We also know that there are many snazzy sites that offer fantastic-sounding deals on eyeglasses. Yet, buying your glasses from a website has a number of drawbacks – and while it may be easy to shop for glasses in your pajamas, easy isn’t always better! There are definite benefits to buying your Las Vegas glasses from our optical store near you. Take a look at what you have to gain by visiting Yesnick Vision Center to choose new eyeglasses:

1. Our opticians know the details of every pair of Las Vegas glasses

Your eyes and your vision are unique, and not all glasses frames and lenses support all vision prescriptions. Depending on your needs, such as bifocals, multifocals, astigmatism, and high myopia, certain styles and glasses designs will help you achieve sharper vision. The thickness of your lenses and the most suitable lens coatings for your lifestyle are also significant – do you know what’s right for you? Our optical staff will eliminate all the guesswork and give you professional advice about the best eyeglasses for you in Las Vegas.

And of course, you also want your glasses to look amazing! When you buy online, who will stand next to you and point out the best materials, shapes, and colors to flatter your face? When you buy glasses from our Las Vegas glasses collection near you, we will stand by your side.

2. Glasses are not one-size-fits-all

Said simply – temples and nose pads need to make contact with your face at the right angle or they’ll hurt. If they are too tight, glasses can be painful, or if they are too wide, they’ll slip down your nose. The types of nose pads and temples also varies, and you can’t know what feels comfortable unless you try them on. As far as your vision, you need an accurate Pupillary Distance (PD) measurement to order lenses in the right size. Our optician will make sure that your Las Vegas glasses are a perfect fit.

3. Online shopping doesn’t always save you money

Many people think that no matter price is being offered for eyeglasses in Las Vegas, they’ll find a better deal online. What customers don’t realize is that optometrists and opticians develop close relationships with premium eyeglass manufacturers. These relationships lead to special promotions and savings. When you buy glasses from our local Las Vegas vision center near you, we’ll offer you rebates and discounts on designer brands, which are unavailable from eyewear websites. Therefore, even if the initial price appears higher on some of the frames in our local glasses collection, your final cost will often be significantly less.

Another point to remember –  not all online glasses sites accept insurance. At Yesnick Vision Center, we accept virtually all medical and vision insurance plans.

4. Eyewear quality ranges from low to high – and we offer only top quality glasses

Many online retailers make a profit by offering the cheapest Made-in-China frames crafted with the most basic types of lenses. In direct contrast, you can count on our premium eyeglasses in Las Vegas to be constructed with durable materials and precise engineering that’s made to last. Our optician will introduce you to a variety of optional lenses coatings and treatments, including transition lenses, polarized, ultra-thin, and scratch-resistant. We understand that eyewear must stand up to rough and tough living, and every pair of our high quality Las Vegas glasses will hold strong over the long-term!

5. Your vision prescription must match your frames

Some vision conditions are more complex than others, and vision correction is can therefore be more challenging. If you have a very high prescription, astigmatism, or a complicated eye condition, you need an expert to craft your lenses. Otherwise, you risk wearing glasses that distort your view of the world.

In fact, several studies report that over 50% of glasses bought online were fit with incorrectly crafted lenses that didn’t match the vision prescription. This leads directly to blurry vision, eye fatigue, and painful headaches.

When you buy designer frames from our brick-and-mortar Las Vegas glasses store near you, our staff will take a personal interest in satisfying your needs. We will help you choose the ideal eyeglasses for crisp vision and a sharp look! And it goes without saying – we’re also much friendlier and caring than your computer!

How to Cope with Low Vision at Work

When someone has low vision, it can affect their level of productivity and independence when doing their job. It can also compromise safety and potentially lead to much frustration. However, there are several helpful actions that can be taken to reduce the stress of low vision at work. Our experienced eye doctor, Dr. David Yesnick, keeps up-to-date with the newest low vision aids and strategies to help our patients live a better, fuller life with low vision in Las Vegas.

Manage the Workplace Conditions

Reduced quality of vision can affect the ability to view and operate a computer, read text, drive, control machinery, count money, and even navigate the office safely. Fortunately, making some simple changes to the workplace and using low vision aids can make a huge difference.

Here are some effective ways to cope, help yourself, and/or help your employees who have low vision:

  • Make sure the lighting conditions are bright enough; add task lighting if necessary
  • Provide low vision magnification devices, either mobile or desk-mounted, to help with reading documents
  • Mount magnifiers on an extendable arm near the printer and announcement boards
  • Provide an extra-large computer monitor to assist with viewing text, along with large button controls to modify the contrast and brightness levels of the display
  • Place all items that are used frequently within easy reach
  • Consider investing in text-to-speech computer software (including for text messaging) for employees with extremely reduced vision
  • Install specialized scanning software that enables hard documents to be scanned and saved to the computer for enlarged viewing
  • Bioptic telescope glasses can help with recognizing faces and seeing objects in the distance
  • Prism eyeglasses can make it easier to read, use a computer, and enhance safety when moving around the office
  • Phones should be large-button
  • Pay attention to how the desk or workstation is positioned – make sure there is no glare from nearby windows; add curtains or blinds to eliminate glare
  • Add bold labels and tactile signs around the office, as well as clear markers to hazardous areas, such as placing contrasting strips on the edges of any steps or on the staircase

Remember – the level of difficulty and frustration that each individual experiences when dealing with low vision at work can vary depending on the low vision devices that are accessible, the amount of support received from fellow employees and staff, and the person’s familiarity with the job and environment. If you, a loved one, an employee or colleague have low vision, please consult with our low vision specialist in Las Vegas to learn about the variety of low vision aids available – and how to make low vision at work into the easiest and friendliest experience possible!

Astigmatism is a common eye condition that occurs when there is an imperfection
in the shape of the cornea of the lens that can lead to blurry or distorted
vision. Regular

life. Contrary to popular belief, it does not happen as a result of reading
in low light or sitting too close to the television. Some people with astigmatism might not be aware that they have an issue,

A Mesquite, Texas resident and seeBOOST user was the subject of a highly rated story on the evening news broadcast by the Dallas ABC affiliate, WFAA Channel 8. Don Douglas was previously featured on WFAA for his generosity in personally paying for children’s school lunches whose families could not afford even those modest costs. This simple act of kindness led to a local movement in the Mesquite Schools to make sure that no child went unfed.

While watching the story, a member of the Evergaze team, Steve Harris, noticed the severe vision loss Don suffered and recognized that his vision and life could be improved with seeBOOST. The Evergaze team was so moved by Don’s kindness, they decided to ‘pay it forward’ by gifting Don his own personal seeBOOST.

The story shows his return to the school to see the young students’ faces for the first time and also to actually read them a story. Don continues to mentor and read to the students at Florence Elementary on a regular basis.

About Evergaze

Evergaze, the developer and manufacturer of seeBOOST®, pioneered a new category of disease-specific prescription glasses to help those coping with vision loss from AMD and Diabetes. The company continues to innovate in developing the world’s first non-implanted “artificial eye”. The company’s goal is to eradicate the impact of vision loss through technology, thus enabling older individuals to benefit from “Vision for Life”.

For example, while it may be true that a change in eyeglass prescription will not cause any improvement, Dr. Yesnick can custom-design glasses instead. That’s why a Low Vision Evaluation is essential for everyone suffering vision loss.

Our Low Vision Evaluation will determine three essential pieces of information:

  1. The amount of remaining vision that your parent has

How Low Vision Aids Gave Me Back My Life

grandparents together

At YESnick Vision Center, we specialize in helping people with low vision to regain or maintain their independence and enhance their quality of life. How do we do this? By matching and fitting people with the most appropriate low vision aids and rehabilitation. Fortunately, there is a vast selection of technologies, devices and strategies – and we are passionate about using all these tools to maximize our patients’ sight!

Low vision can be caused by aging and a variety of ocular problems, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinitis pigmentosa. While people with low vision are not blind, many routine activities – driving, reading, using a computer, watching TV – can be an extreme challenge. As a result, people who were used to living independently can become frustrated and depressed. That is why the correct low vision device is a total life-changer for people with reduced sight.

Janet’s Story

“It has already been months since I started with the low vision devices that Dr. Yesnick recommended, and I am still amazed every day at how much of my life I got back! I had gone years with little hope of ever reading, painting, or watching TV again, and now I can enjoy all of these activities again. I will never take the ability to do routine tasks for granted again.

On my way to my first visit at the Low Vision Center of YVC, I was filled with doubt and skepticism. So many eye doctors had already told me that there was nothing to help me. To go back to the beginning of my story – one day, many years ago, I looked up from the book I was reading and suddenly noticed rainbow-colored circles around the lights in the room. At first, I ignored it. But a week or so later, I also realized that everything also looked hazy – and that’s when I got scared and scheduled an eye exam.

At that point, I was diagnosed with late-stage glaucoma, for which there was no treatment. As my vision worsened, I just adapted and got used to not seeing. And I got used to giving up the activities I loved. One after the other, I dropped all of my favorites: painting, playing cards, watching TV. Depressed and feeling isolated, I lost my interest in socializing or even going out of the house.

When my friend told me about the amazing variety of low vision devices out there to help people like me, I was in shock and felt the first glimmer of hope. After I met with Dr. Yesnik, that glimmer got much brighter! At first, he fit me with mini-telescopes that attach to eyeglasses, and I was able to watch TV. After I shared that I had an interest in painting, the team at Yesnick Vision Center ordered me a pair of high-powered magnifying eyeglasses for doing detailed work. Since then, I finished a whole series of new watercolor paintings. And if that wasn’t enough, I also purchased a talking watch and clock, so I always know the time. Now that my life is so full and rich again – I don’t want to risk wasting a minute of it!

With all the fantastic technology out there, low vision is not a reason to stop doing what you love.”

First 3D Printed Human Cornea – UK Scientists

Senior Woman Smiling Glasses 1280x853First, 3D Printed Human Cornea – UK Scientists

The most advanced artificial cornea ever has been created by scientists using 3D printing and human stem cells. This was done by scientists at Newcastle University in the United Kingdom. The technology, if successfully developed, should be able to help millions of people around the world get a better vision.

The research, which was published in Experimental Eye Research, reports how human corneal stromal cells from the cornea of a healthy donor were mixed together with alginate and collagen to create a ‘bio-ink – a solution that could be printed.

The bio-ink was successfully extruded in concentric circles to form the shape of a human cornea using a simple low-cost 3D bio-printer. The printing took less than 10 minutes. The stem cells after the printing were then shown to culture.

According to Che Connon, Professor of Tissue Engineering at Newcastle University and the research team lead, many teams across the world have been chasing the ideal bio-ink to make this process feasible. “Our unique gel – a combination of alginate and collagen – keeps the stem cells alive whilst producing a material which is stiff enough to hold its shape but soft enough to be squeezed out the nozzle of a 3D printer.” He said.

The experiment was built upon the scientists’ previous works in which cells were kept alive for weeks at room temperature and within a similar hydrogel. But with the now available bio-ink containing stem cells, users can now print tissues without having to worry about growing the cells separately. The scientists also demonstrated that they could build corneas that match the unique specifications of patients.

They originally took the dimensions of the printed tissue from an actual cornea by scanning a patient’s eye and using the data to rapidly print a cornea that matched the size and shape.

Professor Connon further added that the 3D printed corneas will undergo further testing and hope to be able to use them for transplants after several years of testing. However, the experiment has proven that it is feasible to print corneas using coordinates taken from a patient eye and that the approach has potential to combat the worldwide shortage of corneas.

About 10 million people worldwide are known to require preventive surgery to avoid corneal blindness resulting from diseases such as trachoma, an infectious eye disorder. About 5 million people also suffer total blindness due to corneal scarring caused by burns, lacerations, abrasion or disease. The significant shortage of corneas available for transplant will worsen their situation and increase the number.

Dr. Yesnick is a low vision doctor based in Las Vegas and welcomes patients from all over Las Vegas and environs to come in for comprehensive eye exams, treatments, and fitting of contacts, lenses and other devices that will help improve your vision. You are sure of a superfast attention and optical consultation upon your visit.

Artificial Iris is now FDA approved

older woman glasses grassArtificial Iris is now FDA approved

The first stand-alone prosthetic iris in the United States has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This approval would open doors for patients with certain types of eye damage to get the needed help to enable them to see clearly and also improve their appearance.

CustomFlex Artificial Iris, as the surgically implanted device is called, was produced to treat adults and children whose iris is damaged. Iris is the part of the eye that is colored around the pupil. Such damage may be caused by aniridia, a congenital condition in which people are born with a partial or missing iris, or whose iris are missing later in life due to a traumatic injury or melanoma surgical removal. People born with albinism may also have eye problems that could be corrected with the device.

“Today’s approval of the first artificial iris provides a novel method to treat iris defects that reduce sensitivity to bright light and glare. It also improves the cosmetic appearance of the eye in patients with aniridia.” Said Malvina Eydelman, M.D., director of the Division of Ophthalmic, and Ear, Nose, and Throat Devices at the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. He further stated that patients with iris defects may experience severe vision problems, as well as dissatisfaction with the appearance of their eye.

1 in every 50-100,000 Americans have congenital aniridia is rare, people with this disorder have complete or partially absent iris. Since the iris controls the amount of light entering the eye, those with aniridia often have a sensitivity to light and other vision problems.

The CustomFlex Artificial Iris is inserted via surgery and is held in place by the eye’s anatomical structures or by sutures if need be. It is made of thin, foldable medical-grade silicon and can be custom-fitted and colored according to each patient’s requirements.

Nearly 400 adults and children with aniridia or other iris defects were studied and they found the device to be safe and effective. 70 percent of participants studied reported significant decreases in light sensitivity and glare and noted an improvement in their health-related quality of life. The rate of adverse side effects is also low.

According to the FDA, the CustomFlex Artificial Iris is not for use in patients who have abnormally small eye size, uncontrolled or severe chronic inflammation, untreated chronic glaucoma, abnormal blood vessels on the iris, cataract caused by the rubella virus, certain kind of damaged blood vessels in the retina, and inner eye infections. It is also not recommended for pregnant women.

Dr. Yesnick is a low vision optometrist based in Las Vegas and welcomes patients from Las Vegas to come in for comprehensive eye exams, treatments, and fitting of contacts, lenses and other devices that will help improve your vision.

5 Reasons You Need Reading Glasses

superflex opticians pic2

We Offer a Range of Optical Low Vision Devices in Las Vegas

If you have Low Vision, your regular prescription glasses probably do not provide you with adequate vision for all of your tasks. Fortunately, there are many low vision devices to enhance your sight. To benefit from the best devices for your condition, our Low Vision eye doctor will perform a thorough eye exam and evaluation. Then we’ll match you with a suitable optical aid so you can enjoy all your favorite activities and optimize your sight for daily life!

“Near” Optical Devices for Low Vision

Do you want to read or focus on objects or activities up-close? Magnifying reading glasses are an effective and convenient way to improve your near vision. You’ll be able to focus on fine print and details, such as when writing, reading, and sewing.

Along with upgrading your ability to see things that are near, magnifying reading glasses allow you to read comfortably for longer periods of time. They will give you a wider field of view, so you can read more text at once.

Reading glasses can be taken anywhere, which makes them one of the most convenient low vision devices. They are fully portable and leave your hands free – with no need to hold a magnifier. This is very useful for people who want to read a computer screen, follow sheet music, or do fine needlework.

Tips for Using Your New Magnifying Reading Glasses

Sometimes when you first begin to wear your reading glasses, you may find that they don’t offer the same crisp vision as you experienced when you tried them in our Las Vegas optical practice. Don’t worry – this is normal! It can take a bit of time, patience, and practice until you get used to any low vision glasses or aid.

Give yourself some time to figure out the best position to hold your reading material or task at hand. You may have to get used to placing the text at a different distance from your eyes. While this may feel uncomfortable at first, your brain and eyes will adapt. A reading stand or clipboard can be helpful to expand your field of view. You may also need to experiment with various lighting conditions until you find the best home set-up. Usually, the brighter the lighting, the better your visual clarity.

5 Reasons to Try Readers for Low Vision

To sum up, here are a list of benefits you’ll gain with magnifying reading glasses:

  1. They help you read more text at once by providing a large field of view
  2. They offer ultimate convenience – you can take them anywhere you go, e.g.: to the supermarket, restaurant, bookstore, etc…
  3. They leave your hands available to do other tasks, such as writing and sewing
  4. They are an inexpensive Low Vision device that offers great benefits to your quality of life
  5. Contemporary reading glasses come in an array of fashionable styles with designer frames to give you a fantastic look
